Isabella was born in Middlebie, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. Her parents sailed to Canada in 1844. Sadly a younger sister, Agnes, was swept overboard during the voyage.

The family settled in Spencerville, Ontario, where she met her future husband. They married in 1856 and raised 13 children including two doctors, a lawyer and a clergyman.

In the 1870s Andrew built their stone home, known today as "Carmichael House," still standing across from the church.

My father thought the world of his grandmother, a kind and loving person whose home was the center of all family activity for over 50 years.
