Della Mamie (Wilson) Thurman was my maternal grandmother.

Della was the daughter of William Abram Wilson (1857-1933) who was born in Wheeling, Marshall County, West Virginia, and died in Callao, Macon County, Missouri; and Mary Ellen (Sims) Wilson (1862-1941) who was born and died in Macon County, Missouri.

Della was the second of 6 children:

Maude Ethel Wilson 1884 – 1955
Carnie Owen Wilson 1888 – 1935
Virgle Perry Wilson 1891 – 1927
Ernest Evert Wilson 1894 – 1906
Orville Wilson 1902 – 1987

Della grew up on a farm near Callao, Missouri. She attended rural schools and graduated from Atlanta, Missouri, High School. She boarded in Kirksville, Missouri and attended the First District Normal School where she obtained a teaching certificate. She then taught in rural schools in Macon County, Missouri.

On August 22, 1909, at her parents' home, she married Ira Dell Thurman (1883-1956). They made their home with his parents John William and Paulina (Bennett) Thurman on the family farm about 6 miles west of Atlanta, Missouri. Ira and Della had one child, LuVella (Thurman) Dennis (1915-1980), and one grandchild, Blytha (Dennis) Ellis (this writer) who was born on her 62nd birthday.

Della and her daughter were dressmakers and also raised turkeys for a living. They were quilters and gardeners. They played organ and piano and were active in church.

After Ira's parents died, he purchased the family farm. They continued to live and farm the land until 1950 when they moved to a small acreage in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. Their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter lived with them. In Kirksville, Della and her daughter took in ironings for a living, as well as raised a large garden and sold vegetables, had fruit trees and a large strawberry patch. They raised chickens and sold eggs. They always had one or two cows for milk and sold cream.

Della was raised in the Methodist faith and held a membership in the Cooks Chapel Church in rural Atlanta, Missouri. For many years, she attended the Assembly of God churches in Elmer, Missouri and Kirksville, Missouri. She was a faithful Christian woman and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. You would often hear her praying. She also expressed her great love for her husband Ira, and how much she missed him after he died.

Della died in Laughlin Hospital, Kirksville, Missouri. Funeral services were held March 21, 1969 at the Jackson Dee Riley Funeral Home in Kirksville with burial in Maple Hills Cemetery beside Ira. Bearers were her husband's cousins Edgar Thurman, Ora Thurman, and Hubert Thurman; her granddaughter's fiancé Donald Ellis; and her nephews Gail Wilson and Luther Cosby.
