Ira Dell Thurman was my maternal grandfather.

Ira was born the 4th and youngest child of John William Thurman (1844-1913) who was born in Kentucky; and Paulina (Bennett) (1840-1928) who was born in Missouri but whose parents were from Kentucky.

Ira's siblings were:

Luvella (Thurman) Seney 1875-1966
Harvey Thurman 1877-1973
Ezekiel Thurman 1880-1964

Ira was a farmer like his father all his life. He also raised percheron horses for show, and was proud of his mule teams. He had a talent for working with wood and building. He made furniture such as rocking chairs out of young willow trees. I am his only grandchild and I have a bookcase and 3 chairs that he made. I have rocked all of my babies in these rocking chairs. Ira loved to whittle in his spare time and make interesting chains and puzzles out of wood. In the days of cowboys on TV and movies when every child had a toy gun in the 1950s, Grandpa made me a wooden pistol. He took pride in growing a large garden. He built several outbuildings on his properties.

Ira was born on the farm of his parents which was about 7 miles west of Atlanta, Missouri, near the village of Barnesville, and after they died, he bought out his siblings and continued to farm this land.

Ira married Della Manie Wilson, a school teacher, on 22 August 1909 in Macon County, Mo. She was from Callao, Mo. They had only one child, LuVella (Thurman) Dennis, born in 1915 and named after her paternal aunt. She married Tom Roy Dennis of Elmer, Missouri. They had only one child who was Ira and Della's only grandchild, Blytha Onetha (Dennis) Ellis, born in 1947 (this writer).

Ira was saved in the 1920s or 1930s and joined the Assembly of God Church in Elmer, Missouri. He gave up chewing tobacco at that time and served the Lord the rest of his life.

Ira developed bronchiectasis (destruction and widening of the large airways) and could no longer manage his large farm. He, his wife Della, daughter and son-in-law, and granddaughter all moved to Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri in 1950 to 5 acres where they kept milk cows, chickens, and raised a large garden.

Ira died 23 April 1956 and was buried in Maple Hills Cemetery, Kirksville, Mo. Della died in 1969 and was buried beside him.
