Drowns in Rising Torrent of Sioux River at 2dn Island

Harvey Leonard Goes Under While Swimming-Fail to Recover His Body

While several of his boyfriends were looking on, unable to sucessfully give him aid, Harvey Leonard, the 17 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. George Leonard, 121 W 14th St, was drown in the rising torrent of the Sioux River, near 2nd Island, south of the Rock Island Railroad Bridge, at 3:00 Sunday Afternoon. The authorities had not, up to a late hour this afternoon, been able to find the body of the drowned youth.

Body is Recovered
Railroad Men Find Body of Harvey Lenoard Floating Near Cascade Dam

The body of Harvey Leonard, 17 year old son of Mr & Mrs George Leonard, who was drowned while in bathing near near the 2nd Island last Sunday, was recovered this morning near the 6th Street bridge.

It was about 5:30 when men in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad saw something pass over the Cascade dam. They at first thought it was a log or part of a tree. However their curiosity was aroused and they watched the object until they were satisfied that it was a human body. The Eastside policeman was notified and he sent in a call to the fire department and a number of the firemen responded. By this time the body had drived near the 6th Street bridge where it was finally secured & taken from the water.

The body of young Leonard was taken to the Miller undertaking rooms.
