HAROLD EUGENE McCUNE

Harold Eugene McCune was born January 18, 1931 to George Ben and Bonnie Sheldon McCune. God called him home on April 19, 2010, after a year long battle with ALS.

He was born in the Griggs Community and grew up amid family and friends during the depression. The family moved between Missouri and the Texas panhandle and settled in Boise City in 1948. Harold graduated from Boise City High School in 1949.

On September 30, 1950, Harold exchanged wedding vows with Mary Lee Barnes at the First Baptist Church of Boise City. Even though the courtship was brief, they were married for almost 60years. Harold and Mary Lee were saved and baptized together in this same church on April 8, 1951. He was ordained as a deacon on March 10, 1968. They remained faithful servants in the church throughout his illness, even attending services the week he was hospitalized.

During the Korean conflict, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He trained as an aircraft electrician and served in Hutchinson, Kansas, where daughter Kathy Elaine was born. From there, the small family relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Harold was stationed for one year. Daughter Sheryl Diane was born during their stay in Hawaii. Harold was discharged from the Navy on February 16, 1956. He and mary Lee returned to Boise City where he farmed with his father George. Harold and Mary Lee's third daughter, Julia Ann, was born in Boise City.

Harold loved Boise City, Cimarron County and the United States of America. Even though he had lived other places, and could have lived anywhere he wanted, he and Mary Lee preferred to live here. After his retirement, they traveled throughout the country, but he was always glad to return home. Besides his service to this family and his church. Harold was involved in many community activities and volunteered countless hours with the Cimarron County Historical Society.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife Mary Lee, sister; Carolyn and Duane Hegwood, Boise City, Oklahoma, daughters; Kathy and Dan Anderson of Wichita, Kansas, Sherry and Bob Burkett of Duncan, Oklahoma and Julie Wolf of Edmond, Oklahoma.
