Alfred married Sarah Prudence Elliott, daughter of George and Dorcas Elliott in Aug. 1862 in Henry Co., Iowa. To this union were born:

Alfred B. Caviness and his wife Sarah Prudence Elliott came to Baker valley by wagon train in 1865 from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. With them was their two year old son, George. Sarah was pregnant with a girl, Matilda who was born November 22, 1865 Baker County. Alfred, being a strong swimmer, was the hero of the wagon train as he swam the wagon train animals across the Platte River. The first year he was in Oregon, he and others with strong oxen went to Walla Walla, WA to get prunes and apples.
