Lena was born Magdalena Franzmathes, but sometime, during WWI, the family began to feel that Franzmathes sounded a bit too German. Thus, the "Franz" prefix was dropped and the name became Mathes. Interestingly, since the name was never "legally" changed, many of the family resting in the Crystal Plains Cemetery, Smith County, Kansas, use the middle initial "F" on the grave markers. At least a small nod to the original Franzmathes name.
