When he was 8 years old, Edward traveled by covered wagon to Smith County, KS, with the family of his father William Christopher Franzmathes and his grandfather, Anselm Francis Martin Franzmathes. They traveled from Huron County, Canada.

After his marriage to Emma Pletcher, Ed moved to Womer in northern Smith County. He opened a general merchandise store and was a leading citizen of the community. The couple was active in the organization of the First United Brethren Church in Womer. We have phots of their home and store. After the store was destroyed by fire, Ed and Emma returned to Smith Center where he engaged in real estate. Sadly, they had no children.

You may notice that many of the Mathes family buried at Crystal Plains have the middle initial "F". At some point in time, a part of the family decided that the full family name "Franzmathes" sounded much too German. In their desire to become more Americanized, they dropped the Franz portion of the surname. Since they had not legally changed the name through the courts, however, they added the initial "F" to their grave markers, as a nod to the full legal surname which they had changed.
