Sarah Mary Parsons came to Alabama from Laurens, S.C. with her parents, herbal doctor Samuel Parsons and his wife, Susannah Powers Parsons. Sarah was married to James Raney on 9 Jan. 1844 in Jefferson County, Alabama by Justice of the Peace A.J. Waldrop.

The two had a farm near Adger.

According to census records, Sarah never bore any children. However, in the 1900 Census, she is shown as living with W.L. Raney and identified as his widowed mother. Perhaps he was an adopted son.
