Ralph served as commanding officer of Co. F 2nd Battalion 273rd Infantry Regiment 69th Infantry Division. The division was activated May 15, 1943 and trained at Camp Shelby, Ms. and deactivated Sept. 15, 1945 at Camp Kilmer N.J. Ralph retired from the army a Lt. Colonel in 1963 and worked with IBM corporation for several years.

Captain Ralph Baucum of Newton, son of Ernest L. Baucum, recently was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation, dated April 6, 1945, read: " For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 27 February 1945 at ********* Germany. During a successful attack, Captain Baucum courageously and skillfully led his company to victorious completion of its mission. In the course of the assault he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to hearten his men to secure better vantage point from which to direct operations. His courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Captain Baucum and the armed forces of the United States. By command of Major General Reinhardt.

Captain Baucum also was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster May 6 1945 and signed by the same officer, read: "For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy on April 6 1945 near ******** German. When told of the presence of enemy near his position during an attack, Captain Baucum unhesitatingly went forward to dissolve the threat to his company. Seriously wounded in the shoulder by the first shot he dropped to one knee, killing the enemy who had shot him, and participating in a firefight which resulted in the elimination of the enemy before him. Refusing to be evacuated he went on with the attack of the town and brilliantly organized its defense. His courage and devotion to duty, reflect the highest credit upon Captain Baucum and the armed forces of the United States".
