Jacob was the eldest surviving son of Nicholas Vogt (# 51341892) and Katherine Deller Vogt (# 51341894). He grew up near Lockport, Will County, Illinois before heading out to Wibaux, Dawson County Montana with his parents and siblings around 1909. By 1930 he was running the farm for his aging parents. He later moved to Bozeman to be near his widowed mother and his sister. He lived in the Baxter Hotel on Main Street in Bozeman for twenty years.
