He enlisted on the same day as his brother, William, on 1 Feb 1864, from Milwaukee. They both served in Company L, until Aug 1865, when Jacob was transferred to Company E and William was transferred to Company H. Jacob mustered out on 21 Sep 1865.

Married Barbara Michelbach on his 25th birthday (26 Jul 1868) in Milwaukee. They had 2 children, Charlotte (b. 1869) and Wilhelmina (b.1873). Marriage probably ended in divorce.

Married Rosette Glaeser on 3 Jul 1887 in Jefferson County. They adopted a son, Edward (b. 1882). She is last found on the 1920 census, living with Jacob at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. According to Jacob's third marriage certificate, Rosette died on 20 Feb 1919 (which conflicts with the 1920 Census). No death record found for her in Waupaca County.

Married Mary E. (Culver) Roberts on 20 Feb 1924 in the city of Waupaca. She had divorced her first husband in 1922 and had been a cook at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. She survived Jacob.

DESCENDANT OF MARTIN LUTHER RESIDES HERE
Has Modest Home On School Street In This City

Waupaca can boast of being the residence of the last lineal descendant of Martin Luther living in North America. He is Jacob Martin Von Bora Luther, 91-year old Civil war veteran, who was for years an inmate of Wisconsin Veterans’ Home. This descendant of the great reformer was born in Baireuth, Germany, July 26, 1843, and immigrated to America at the age of four years, with his father, Daniel, a brother, John, and two sisters.

In 1862 Jacob Luther enlisted in Company E, 4th Wisconsin cavalry, and served in and around Mobil and Baton Rouge. After discharge he married and settled in Milwaukee where he worked as a cooper until near 1900. After the death of his first wife, he purchased a farm in the town of Royalton, which he still owns. Some 14 years ago he became an inmate of the Grand Army Home for Veterans near this city. About two months ago he moved to this city to reside.

LAST LUTHER, 92, IS BURIED
Supposed Last descendant of Reformer’s Family Buried At Wis. Vets Home

A 92-year-old Civil War veteran who achieved prominence locally as the “last descendant of Martin Luther”, died at the Wisconsin Veterans Home here Saturday.

Jacob Martin Luther, a native of Germany who served his adopted country as a cavalry officer, was buried Tuesday in the Veterans Home cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Luther was born in Liebensein, Germany, July 26, 1843 and came to America with his parents in 1847, the family moving to that typically German city of Milwaukee. There young Luther learned the Cooper’s trade, served a patrician German brewer for r11 years as gardener and coachman, and in 1864 enrolled in Company E of the 4th regiment of Wisconsin cavalry, serving until Sept. 21, 1865.

Jacob Luther was married to Mary E. Roberts Feb. 20, 1924, this being his third marriage. He was a life-long member of the Evangelical church.

Much has been said and written about Jacob Luther’s claim to being the “last living descendant of the great reformer, Martin Luther.” The facts are these: Jacob Luther did belong to the family tree of Martin Luther, was an 11th generation descendant of the reformer’s uncle, Hans Luther der Kleine.

The funeral was held from Our Savior’s church here Tuesday, service read by Rev. Henry N. Hansen, pallbearers Anton Peterson, W.C. Rasmussen, Fred Nohr, James Olson, N.P. Peterson and Peter Mortensen. Deceased is survived by his wife and an adopted son.
