Mr. Banks died March 27, 2010, at Hospice of East Texas.
He was born Dec. 14, 1950, in Tyler. He was a graduate of Emmett J. Scott and attended Tyler Junior College.
He was a lifelong resident of Smith County and was a member of New Holland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the Male Chorus and gospel choir. He was a past director of physical plant at Texas College and was a carpenter. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe L. Banks Sr.; and son, Kevin Banks.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Banks of Tyler; mother, Lillian Banks of Tyler; son, Rod Sanders (Anna) of Oklahoma; daughters, Traketa Edwards (Derrick) of Dallas and Chatrinia Johnson (B.J.) of Dallas; brothers, Joe Banks Jr. of Tyler, Sam Banks (Jennifer) of Tyler and Robert Banks (Janice) of Tyler; sisters, Pam Banks, Barbara Banks and Beverly Monroe, all of Tyler; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at New Holland Baptist Church.
