Thomas was the son of John Carney. He was born in the South Branch of the Potomac, probably Hampshire Co. which was Virginia at the time, changed to WV in 1863.He married Mary PARSONS. They were of Harrison Co. and Randolph Co. before moving to Jackson Co. Ripley dist. There were 16 children.
Many years ago, there use to be a quaint old flag stone by a neglected grave. It lay half way between the site of John Harpold's cabin and Thomas Carney's. It read in memory of Thomas Carney born Oct. 15, 1768 and departed this life Oct. 19, 1846. 78 years old and 4 days.
