The American Legion furnished a firing squad of eight men, two color guards, two color bearers and a bugler for the funeral of August Wilkowski, commander of the Horace M. Walker G.A.R. Post, held this afternoon and the full military honors were paid to the dead. Services were held at the German M.E. church, and Rev. A.R. E. Schreiber officiating with members of the G.A.R. post and the Women's Relief Corps in attendance. Burial was at Evergreen.

August Wilkowske immigrated to America in 1855 with his mother Justine and several other members of his extended family. He settled in Manitowac, WI and farmed for awhile after the war. He was married twice and had 9 children with his first wife, Caroline Krueger and eight children with his second wife, Fredericka Richter Blank.
At the time of his death, August was the oldest Civil War veteran in the state of Wisconsin. August was a private in the 3rd WI Infantry, Company A during the Civil War. He enlisted Sep 22, 1864 and mustered out Jun 9, 1865. The 1890 veterans schedule shows he suffered from rheumatism and heart/lung problems. He was finally awarded a pension in 1902 of $6 a month.
