Samuel Benjamin Cross, perhaps the leading genealogist who has researched and published on the Griest family ancestry, stated (1) that the Griest family has two branches: the York Co., PA branch, and the Lancaster Co., PA branch. While Cross traced the York Co. branch directly back to John Griest (1640-1688) “The Pioneer”, he was not able to establish a parallel direct ancestry for the Lancaster Co. branch. The earliest identifiable ancestor for the Lancaster Co. branch is the subject of this memorial, Thomas Griest (ca. 1750-1825). Thomas Griest was first documented in the 1773 Little Britain Twp., Lancaster Co., PA tax records (2). He had no land and only one horse and two cows. He is reported next in 1777, also in Little Britain Twp., when he wanted to join the Little Britain Preparative Meeting of the US Quakers (3). This Lancaster Co. branch Thomas Griest was assigned the Griest family genealogy numbering system number L5-1 by Cross (1) to indicate that he is probably the 5th generation, Lancaster Co. branch of the Griest family, counting from the first generation “1-1” John Griest (1640-1688) “The Pioneer”.

The L5-1 Thomas Griest (ca. 1750-1825) is often confused with the York Co. branch 5-8 Thomas Griest (1752-1834) (4). That latter Thomas is the son of 4-2 John Griest (1716-1780) and Susannah Pyle, the grandson of 3-1 John Griest (1694-1751) and Martha Baldin, the great-grandson of “2-1” George Griest (ca. 1665-1730) and Hannah, and the great-great-grandson of “1-1” John Griest (1640-1688) “The Pioneer”. The two Thomas Griests are related through their common ancestor, John Griest (1640-1688), “The Pioneer”.

These really are two different Thomas Griests, who were contemporaries living only a county or two apart in SE PA. The L5-1 Thomas Griest (ca.1750-1825) had 12 children with Priscilla Brabson in Freemont, West Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., PA (5) while the 5-8 Thomas Griest (1752-1834) died childless and listed no children in his will (4). The latter lived and died in the Latimore Twp., Adams Co. (part of York Co. until 1800), PA (4).

The following information on the L5-1 Thomas Griest is quoted from Cross (5):
“#L5-1. Thomas Griest of Fremont, West Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., Pa., d. before 3-7-1825, m. 9-15-1779 by John Beard, Priscilla Brabson, b. 4-1-1757, of Thomas Brabson & Hannah. The Chester County Courthouse records show that Thomas had no will and everything was given to his son L6-9 Jacob. Thomas Brabson settled in Little Britain Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1738. His WILL is recorded at Lancaster Vol. 1-I, page 23. He died before 3-2-1792. Sons: Thomas and John. Daughters: PRECILLA Griest and Mary Dinsmore. Ella & Evans History of Lancaster Co., Pa., page 938, shows, "Thomas Brabston: on 2-15-1748 a Warrant was granted to Thomas Brabston for 50 acres near Henry Reynold's land, and on 1-4-1759 another for 25 acres next to his other land. On these two warrants, 165 acres were surveyed in Little Britain north of Octoraro Creek. It is now owned by Henry P. Townsend and the heirs of Reuben Cook." Octoraro Creek is the County Line between Little Britain Twp., Lancaster Co., on the northwest and West Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., on the southeast. Thomas & Priscilla had the following children born in West Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., Pa.

*L6-1 Abner, b. 11-28-1779, d. 1870
*L6-2 Thomas, b. 2-9-1781

*indicates continued generations

The parents of L5-1 Thomas Griest (ca. 1750-1825) are not known with certainty, but it has been claimed (6) that Thomas’s father is Edward Griest (b. ca. 1727 in Lancaster Co., PA).
