The Honorable Henry Shaver TROUT was born 15 Oct 1841 in Roanoke County, Virginia, the son of John TROUT (1813-1882) and Eliza Jane SHAVER (1820-1853). His father's farm lands became the basis for Big Lick and eventually the City of Roanoke.
With the coming of the Civil War, Henry left his studies at Roanoke College at the age of 19 and enlisted on 13 May 1861 at Salem, Roanoke, VA as a private in Company "I," 28th Virginia Infantry, which was also known as the "Roanoke Grays." Henry was promoted to Sergeant on 1 Aug 1862, and to 2nd Lt. on 15 Nov 1862. Lt. Henry TROUT served with Gen. George PICKETT's Division at the Battle of Gettysburg, was later taken prisoner at Saylor's Creek, VA during Lee's retreat from Petersburg, VA, remaining in the prison at Johnson's Island, OH for some months before being exchanged.
After conclusion of the war, Henry initially returned to farming, but soon gained prominence in a wide variety of business enterprises, to ultimately include positions as president of the First National Bank; vice-president of the Roanoke Trust, Loan and Safe Deposit Company; president of the Roanoke Gas and Water Company; was an organizer of the Roanoke & Southern Railroad Company, and also a very active supporter of the general development of Roanoke as a thriving railroad center.
Public offices held by Henry Shaver TROUT included Virginia State Representative to the VA House of Delegates 1877-1881; Virginia State Senator 1882-1886; and the 7th Mayor of the City of Roanoke 1 July 1892-30 June 1894. His father, John TROUT (1813-1882), had been the first mayor of Big Lick, which had ultimately served as the basis for the City of Roanoke.
Henry Trout married Annie Elmira THOMAS of Montgomery County, Virginia, on 16 May 1866. Three children were born to this union, Mary Eliza, 10 Mar 1867; John Thomas, 12 Feb 1871; and Martha Belle TROUT 25 Oct 1875.
Politically, Henry Shaver TROUT was a Democrat, fraternally a member of the Masonic Order, religiously a Lutheran, and served as an elder of that church for many years.
Henry Shaver TROUT's grave is listed as Site #5 on the Fair View Cemetery walking tour, located on Confederate Drive just east of the intersection with Magnolia Avenue.
