Husband of (1) Eliza Jane SHAVER (1820-1853)and (2) Martha B. POTTER (1825-1885)

John TROUT was born 11 February 1813 near Timberville, Rockingham, Virginia, the son of George Nathan TROUT (1782-1850) and Annie Marie "Polly" MILLER (1792-1856). John was christened on 29 may 1813 in Rader Lutheran Church, Timberville, Rockingham, Virginia.

Young John was about five years old when he moved with his parents to Botetourt (now Roanoke) County in 1818 where his father George Trout purchased a farm a few miles west of the present city of Roanoke. When twenty-five years old, John purchased the Stover property near Big Lick, a tract of land containing two hundred and fifty acres, for which he paid $27.00 per acre, and when Roanoke City was established, a large part of it was located on this farm.

John improved and added to the Stover house, built by William Stover in 1797, and occupied the same as his residence until the time of his death. For many years, he operated it as a house of entertainment and the "Trout House" was known far and wide to the traveling public. The "Ponce de Leon" was later built on the old "Trout House" site. It has been said that "during the Civil War, no soldier was ever charged for entertainment at the Trout House, and the proprietor kept several teams engaged in transporting sick soldiers and the remains of the dead from the railroad to their homes and friends, all of which was done without charge."

Public offices held by John TROUT include County Assessor of the Revenue; Justice of the Peace (50 years); twice a councilman; and was Mayor of Big Lick from the time it was first incorporated until a short while before his death.

John also represented Roanoke County in the State Legislature after the war and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Roanoke College, being elected President of the Board in 1868, which position he held until his death in 1882.

He was the first founder of the Lutheran Church in Big Lick, holding the office of Deacon and Elder for many years.

John was also the senior partner of the firm of Turner, Trout & Co., tobacco dealers, and was widely known in business circles.

John TROUT was 1st married on 10 April 1837 to Eliza Jane SHAVER, daughter of Henry SHAVER and Susannnah "Susan" STRICKLER of Roanoke County. Children to this marriage were George W. , May 1838; Mary Susan, 3 Dec 1839; and the Hon. Henry Shaver TROUT, born 15 Oct 1841. Daughter Mary Susan married Peyton Leftwich TERRY. After first wife Eliza died of typhoid fever on 3 Apr 1853, John TROUT married 2nd to Martha B. POTTER of Franklin County, Virginia.
