Member Mark Maxwell provided the following information from William S. Stryker's Battle of Trenton (Trenton, 1895) and his paper "Washington's Reception by the People of New Jersey in 1789" (Trenton, 1882), p. 9 & 13:
She was the daughter of John Chambers of Trenton; was born November 30, 1761 , and died in the same house, on the Pennington road in which she was born, at the age of sixty-three. Mr. Calhoun was a prominent merchant in the city.
Mrs. Calhoun was a member of a committee of prominent women who prepared the reception celebration of Gen. George Washington as he made his way to New York City to be sworn in as the first President of the United States.
Miss Catherine Calhoun, daughter of Alexander Calhoun married Daniel Baker, who was for many years Keeper of the New Jersey State Arsenal and an Ensign in Captain Wall's Company in the War of 1812. Young Catherine was one of thirteen girls that represented the 13 states in the reception of Washington.
Note: Her birth date as reported by Stryker is in keeping with her age at death as reported on her gravestone (in her 63rd year). One obituary, however, states that she was 70 years old at death.
Also, the death date published in Hall's history of this church (4 Sep. 1821) is a misreading of the gravestone inscription. The incorrect year was later shown on the plaque listing gravestones that had been destroyed over time. Three obituaries and her estate inventory show that Susanna died in Sep. 1824; one obituary refers to her as Susan.
