Born and raised in Scotland, Bob enlisted in the Scots Guards on 2 February 1921 and served until the completion of his three year term of service. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal and was described by a superior as an "honest man, hardworking and very reliable." He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 19 February 1924. He then served as a Constable in the Edinburgh City Police Force from 9 September 1924 to 21 July 1926, when he resigned to emigrate to the United States.

He embarked from the port of Greenock, Scotland, on 8 August 1926 as a second cabin passenger aboard the ship Cameronia of the Anchor Line. He settled in Brooklyn, NY, and found employment as a service station agent and operator.

On 16 September 1933 Bob and Christina Mackay Macdonald were married at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. Two daughters were born in Brooklyn in 1934 and 1935. The family relocated to Montclair, NJ, about 1940 and a third daughter was born in Glen Ridge in 1941. Bob later found employment in New Jersey as a gardener on a private estate and the family lived in separate quarters on the estate. He was a member of the National Association of Gardeners and an avid photographer.
