AGED ALTA VISTA CITZEN IS DEAD
Mr. Conrad Erion, Long A Resident Of This County, Died Wednesday, April 7th-Funeral Held Saturday
Mr. Conrad Erion, whose sudden death we reported last week, was born November 8, 1839, in Tunigen, Germany, where he was brought up in a Christian home and received a thorough religious education. In 1858, Conrad left home and went to London, England, and one year later to New York, where he found employment in a tannery. Here he married Miss Jane Delelmade on the 8th of June, 1861.
A year later after the marriage they moved to Lemont, Ill., where they enjoyed farm life for twelve years. In 1874 they came to Chickasaw County, making their home near North Washington. Later they purchased a farm 2 miles east of Alta Vista, which was their home until Mr. Erion bought a farm adjoining town on the south. About 1901 the family decided to retire from farming and to enjoy a well deserved rest. A home on the south end of main street was built. Mrs. Erion's health soon began to fail and finally passed away on December 22, 1904.
Since that time Mr. Erion has changed his dwelling place many times until of late he again occupied his own residence. About last New Year's the aged man suddenly was over come with a severe cold which seemed to have affected the entire organism, especially lung, heart, and kidneys. He was taken care of by his children, Mrs. Schoenfeldt of Ionia, Mrs. Hebrank, Mrs. Wm. Arndt, and Mrs. Wm. Erion.
During the last four weeks the patient gave hopes for slow recovery and arrangements were made and completed to move Father Erion to his son's hotel in order to give him the best care. However, without the slightest warning, death demanded his soul and at an age of 75 years and 5 months, Mr. Erion passed away quietly Wednesday evening, April 7th, at 8:15, leaving to mourn his death his two sisters, Mrs. Carl Vick of Alta Vista, and Mrs. Katherine Rogers of Buffalo; eight children, Mrs. Anna Schoenfeldt of Ionia, Mrs. Katherine Hebrank of Canby, Minn, Mrs. Wm. Arndt, east of town; Charles and Walter of Chicago, Conrad of Osage, George of Ortley, S. D., and Wm of Alta Vista; there are also twenty-nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Erion has been a member of the Lutheran church through all his life. he was known as an ambitious, untiring worker, ever honest and reliable, always neighborly and well experienced.
The funeral was held Saturday, April 10th, at 1:30 p.m. conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. W. Knappe. The pall bearers were Messrs. Albert Tietjen, Wm Glienke, Fred Grotupp, Charles Jochim, Peter Haaf, and Herman Radtke.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral services were the Schoenfeld family of Ionia, Mr. and Mrs. John Hebrank of Canby, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Erion of Orchard, Messrs. Charles and Walter Erion of Chicago.
