Joseph was the son of William who died 1658/9 in Ipswich and Sarah (Ayers) Lamson. Sarah (Ayers) Lamson m2 10 Apr. 1661 Thomas Hartshorne of Reading.

Joseph was a gifted stone carver renown for his work. A fine example of his work is the stone for William Dickson (1614-1692) in the Old Burying Ground in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nathaniel and Caleb were also stone carvers and signed their work NL and CL, respectively .
