Enlisted 18 November 1861 at Berlin Township, Monroe County, Michigan; he was residing in Lapeer County prior to his enlistment at 18 years of age; mustered in on 6 February 1862, Company F, Michigan 10th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; captured and imprisoned 25 February 1864 at the Battle of Buzzard's Roost, Whitfield County, Georgia; died on 13 August 1864 due to a wound and disease (Vulnus sclopetarium - gunshot wound, and Scorbutus - scurvy) as a POW at Andersonville Prison, Macon County Georgia. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 spells his surname as "Aulger.")
