Mary Mercein FitzRandolph was born 1816 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, the 2nd of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to newspaper publisher and one-time Mayor of New Brunswick, David FitzRandolph and his wife, Elizabeth "Eliza" Stanbury.

She was the paternal grandchild of Lewis FitzRandolph & Rachel Snowden; and gr-grandchild of Emphraim FitzRandolph and Rachel Stelle. She was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Edward FitzRandolph (ca. 1615-1684)of Nottinghamshire, England whose family settled in Barnstable, MA in 1630, but later come to Piscataway, NJ in 1669, fleeing the religious oppression of Massachusetts. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of Daniel Stanbury and Elizabeth Snell of New York City.

Mary never married, and was the last surviving member of this family. After both her parents died in 1863, the then 47-year old spinster moved in with her elderly paternal aunt, Elizabeth FitzRandolph, widow of Samuel Baker, and resided in New Brunswick. This household of women included Elizabeth's unmarried daughter Catherine, and Eliza FitzRandolph, her niece, daughter of brother, Stephen FitzRandolph Sr.
