Eloise Smith Irwin

Eloise Smith Irwin, 93, of Newport, Ore., died April 7, 2010 at her home.

She was born Nov. 13, 1916 to Sidney James and Gertrude (Sneed) Smith at the beautiful Smith farm, two miles north of Halsey. While she was still a very young girl, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord.

In 1935, at the age of 19, she left home to attend Normal School at Monmouth and obtained her teaching credentials. She then taught in Union Point, McKenzie Bridge and Mapleton. She returned to complete her college degree at Willamette University in 1941, where she was a classmate of Mark Hatfield. She taught for one year at Bend.

During World War II, she volunteered as an occupational therapist and spent 1944 to 1947 working with injured war veterans. She met her future husband, Philip R. Irwin, a radio announcer at KGW in Portland, while working at Barnes Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. They were married March 23, 1947 in Halsey at the Methodist Church.

She had a daughter, Priscilla, and a son, Mark. In October 1950, she was pregnant with her third child, Phyllis, when her husband died of polio. To support her family after his death she resumed teaching in 1955 at Mapleton, where she taught for eight years. She returned to live on the old Smith farm with her mother, Gertrude, in 1963 after the death of her father, Sidney. She taught at Shedd grade school for 22 years, where she was a much-loved teacher and mentor.

In 1985, Gertrude died, and Eloise moved to Corvallis. She lived there for 21 years, enjoying her volunteer work as a literacy teacher to Oregon State University foreign students, as well as reading in the local elementary school and being active in the Corvallis First Baptist Church. In 2006, she moved to Newport to live with her daughter, Priscilla.

A graveside service was held Monday, April 12, at the Pine Grove Cemetery near Halsey. At her request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, Worldwide Projects, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington Street, Albany, OR 97321.

Fisher Funeral Home in Albany is handling arrangements.
