Charles (Virgil) Henderson, 87, of Wayland, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 1984, at 4:20 p.m. at Keokuk Area Hospital. The son of William F. and Edith Shuman Henderson, he was born at Canton on Oct. 14, 1897. He married Lillian I. Kittle and she preceded him in death. He married Theresa Wussler Thompson on Dec. 1, 1940, at Keokuk, Iowa, and she survives. Also surviving are one son: William H. Henderson of Clinton, Ill.; two step-daughters: Mrs. Marvin (Eleanora) Hudson of Wayland and Mrs. Donald (Patricia) Shelton of Aurora, Ind.; two sisters: Mrs. Mary Tuley and Mrs. Marie Baker, both of Quincy, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, three sons in infancy, one brother: Homer Henderson and two sisters: Lutie Long and Sinia Ellison. Henderson attended the Baptist Church early in his life, and was interested in the Catholic faith in his later years. He had lived and farmed in Lewis County until moving to Wayland in 1976. Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. at Shaffer and Sons Chapel with Father Robert Duesdieker officiating. Burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery at Canton. Organist was Kathleen Keller. Singers were Dennis Shaffer and Wayne Blum. Pallbearers were Howard Kirchner, Lester Kirchner, Marvin Powers, William Baxter, Keith Reed and John Brooks. Memorials may be made to the Joseph Woods heart fund. Arrangements by Shaffer and Sons Funeral Home.
