Some notes from Don Rupert (1913-2009)

Recent newspaper clipping in Columbiana paper about Ruperts, Rummells and Woods states they all helped pioneer Columbiana County. The article mentions that Adam Rupert came to America with his three older brothers in 1764. He served in the Revolutionary war and moved to Unity Township in 1800 at the age of 44. The article states Rupert was the first to go to the office in Steubenville for land in Unity Township. He bought two iron stoves which heated the home he built, a two story log cabin with a loft, entireley. There was no fireplace in the home that still stands on Metz Road. He married Elizabeth Goetz. Rupert is buried behind the Unity Brick Church, where his decendents errected a monument to him in the 1920's. According to church records, the first meeting of that church were actually held in Rupert's home in 1802. Rupert and his son Jacob, were both important in the church's history. See more information from article under Son Jacob and son Benjamin.

Adam Rupert bought sec 17 in Unity twp in 1800. He built his house and barn on ground adjacent to and elevated above a flood plain which has become a swamp since Beaver Lake was built in the 1981-20 period. Very likely it was not forested when Adam bought and was a great benefit to him as a source of good pasture and hay for his livestock. Three springs watered the area. From this flood plain water flows north in to the Mahoning River drainage system and south into the Little Beaver Run system. Soil types in area include much Wooster soil which is considered the best in the area. Wooster soil was heavily forested with massive big oak, poplar , ash and chestnut, some hickory, walnut and on thinner soils beech and sugar maple.
Adam was one of the founding fathers of the Reformed church known variously as the Forney Church. (Henry Forney supplied the land. The Reformed Church, Salem Church, Unity Brick Church and perhaps more. It was located a little over 1 mile east of Adams home on sec. 10 of Unity twp. The original log church was replaced with a substantial brick church in 1828-29 and that one in 1875 which, with additions still stands.. Both a Luthern and a Reformed congregation share the church unit about 1840. end DR notes.

November 1999 Per email with decendents of older brother of Adam Rupert named Johan there wer 4 brothers that came to America to avoid the military from Bavaria Germany. Ther were John, Martin, Michael, and Adam. John was the oldest. They came to America and fought in the Revolutionary war under Pennsylvania. Adam moved to Unity Twonship and John migrated to - Hanoverton Township Columbiana Ohio or Stark Co Ohio. More information is being studied.

1999- visited grave in Unity Brick Cemetery - grave is marked with Revolutionary war marker. Also Martin is buried beside Adam - but no dates on grave. This may be brother Martin. Also Margaret Rupert who is Margaret Goetz is beside him with small marker - no dates on it. Elizabeth Rupert is beside Martin. Wife - sisters? relationship? no dates

I live in the same section 17 that Adam Rupert settled in the early 1800s. I have a letter Don Rupert sent us July 2007 that details how Adam was able to settle our section. My great-great-great-greatfather Michael Hively was one of his backers, Adam than deeded 100 acres to Michael in 1807, this farm is still in the Hively family.
