Private, 11 Platoon, Delta Company, 1st Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton, Alberta. He was serving as a member of Task Force 3-09 Battle Group deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Pte Todd died after stepping on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in the vicinity of Belanday, in Dand district, approximately eight kilometres southwest of Kandahar City.

Aged 26, he grew up on the family dairy farm in Bright, Ontario. He worked as a firefighter before joining the army inspired by his grandfather, a veteran of WWII, and a great-grandfather who served in WWI. Tyler enlisted in 2007 and was only weeks away from completing a six month tour of duty. A commander praised him as enthusiastic and inspirational to his platoon. "Tyler was a practical joker; he would often hide rocks and candies in the other soldier's beds. He was a very dedicated soldier and excelled in all the positions in which he was employed." Friends also remembered his hardworking and warm nature and fondness for dirt biking and hockey.

Pte Todd leaves behind his parents Beverly and Bryan, sisters Samantha and Jenna, grandmother Jackie, other relatives and many friends. Predeceased by his grandparents Don Doan and John and Trudy Todd.

Funeral with military honours was held at the Plattsville Missionary Church on April 19, 2010 followed by private family interment service in Innerkip Cemetery.

Canada has now lost 142 service personnel since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. A diplomat, journalist and two aid workers have also died.
