Ed, as he was known, was the son of pioneers August and Mary Nutter Hett. Born in WI, he made the trip to Lane County OR with his family at the age of seven.

His father died when Ed was ten. He worked from a very young age and later became a fisherman. On Oct. 23, 1901 he married Effie Cronk. They had 5 children, one who died in infancy.

On May 4, 1925 around 2:30 AM while fishing on Seven Devils Drift in the Columbia River near the mouth of the Cowlitz River, a net from another boat became entangled in Ed's boat propeller. It is believed he fell in the river while attempting to free the net.

His boat was found drifting later that morning and his body was found two weeks later. He was 57 years of age.
