August Hett came to the United States around the age of twenty. He married Mary Nutter on 27 Oct 1855 in Portsmouth NH. Their first child Charles was born there.
He and Mary then moved to Wausau WI where he farmed and worked as a carpenter. Their next five children were born in WI.
August and his family made the journey to OR around 1875. He began a sawmill on the Long Tom River which he owned and operated for about three years.
While adjusting some machinery, an accident occurred. August was severely cut by a saw. He sustained a mortal wound to his arm and back. He died at the age of 46.
