Edith Virginia Thompson Emerson, 84, of Broadway, Va., died April 8, 2010, at Avante of Harrisonburg.

She was born Oct. 24, 1925, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Ruth V. Phillips Thompson.

She was a homemaker and a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She was a member of Mountain Valley United Methodist Church near Harrisonburg and attended New Market POW's Club.

On Oct. 29, 1947, she married Walter Thomas Emerson, who preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1997.

Surviving are a son, Jearl "Jerry" Emerson of Broadway; daughters, Sharon Putnam of Yelm, Wash., Karen Lokey of Broadway, Carolyn Turner of Fulks Run, Gloria Mitchell of Broadway; six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin L. Thompson.

The Rev. Erich Bennett will conduct a funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain Valley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
