Mr. John Courtland Passes Away Early Tuesday Morning.
Funeral Was Held Yesterday Afternoon.
Mr. John Courtland, a resident of Jackson county for over forty years, passed away Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock at his home on West Locust street. Mr. Courtland suffered a paralytic stroke and had been in failing health for many months.
He was born in Rochester, New York on March 24, 1844. He came to Tipton, Iowa, when 10 years of age, and when a young man drove a stage between Tipton and Muscatine. It was while living in Tipton that he enlisted in Co. E. 16th Iowa Inf. and served faithfully during the entire period of the Civil war. On July 22, 1864, he was taken prisoner and for nine months and was confined in the Andersonville prison, which was located near Macon, GA. W. W. Meginnis of this city was also captured and taken prisoner at the same time.
On December 18, 1867, at DeWitt, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Augusta Haney, and they came to Maquoketa about 45 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Courtland celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last December.
In early life Mr. Courtland followed the trade of a harness maker. For several years he served as janitor of the Fourth ward school building of this city.
Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mary Pool of Fulton, Jessie of Mount Vernon, Mrs. Ella Petersen of Wheatland, Mrs. Bessie Hill of Savanna, Mrs. Anna Dodson of Clinton, and Hattie, Arthur and William at home.
The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home. Dr. J. G. Morgan officiated. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
