On April 22, 1967, the 1/5th(M) began another operation in one of their favorite "homes away from home."
Operation Manhattan had the objective of destroying VC elements, supplies and bases in the Ho Bo Woods, the Boi Loi Woods and along the Saigon River. The 2nd Brigade area of operations was the lower Boi Loi and Ho Bo Woods area.
An after action report stated "It apperared from the start that the VC had been forwarned of the operation. There was plain evidence that the VC, shortly before the operation began, had deliberately and unhurriedly evacuated the area. They employed AT and AP mines and booby traps along with 2 and 3 man sniper teams to delay friendly forces."
One Bobcat from the Recon Platoon was killed when an APC detonated a mine
Born in Chicago, IL he resided with his family in Stoneham for 15 years before moving to North Andover in 1965 where he enlisted in the Army. He was a member of the sophomore class at North Andover High School. He underwent basic and advanced training at Fort Dix NJ. and Fort Devens MA. Specialist English was deployed to Vietnam in July 1966 and was due to return home in June 1967.
Army Specialist 4 James P. English of 21 Ash St. North Andover was killed on his 19th Birthday, April 22, when his personnel carrier struck a road mine. Awarded the Purple Heart Medal for head wounds suffered Sept 19 near Tay Ninh Vietnam. He was hospitalized a month before returning to combat duty from the second Battalion, 196th Light Infantry.
He was the son of Patricia M. English and the late James L. English. Besides his mother he left four brothers, Kevin, Brendan, Michael, and Timothy English.
SPC 4 James P. English was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
