G.A.R. MARKERThe son of John Baxter & Sarah Beaseman Murray Chenowith and the husband of Elnora G. "Nellie" Buckingham Chenoweth, whom he married February 26, 1867, and who died in 1869, and Emily Jane Baile Chenoweth, whom he married October 1, 1872. In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in District 8, Carroll County, Maryland. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Westminster, Carroll County, August 15, 1862, with Co. C, 6th Md Inf, at the rank of private. Promoted to corporal August 23, 1862, but reduced to ranks November 15, 1862. Hospitalized for illness in Stanton U.S. General Hospital September 1863 until his transfer to the Veteran Reserve Corps in February 1865. Honorably discharged July 3, 1865.
