David grew up in Auburn, CA, attended school there, and later was employed by the State Forestry Service. He enlisted in the Merchant Marine four months prior to his death. He was killed at the age of 18 in an accident while at an Australian port where his ship was unloading cargo. His remains were returned in March 1949 for re-burial. He was survived by his parents, Albert and Grace Howcroft; his brothers, George and Wilda; and his sisters, Edna and Katherine.
