Daughter of John and Mary O'Brien Keegan. Catherine's parents were born in Ireland and by 1850 were living in Livingston County, New York. Eventually they settled in Wabasha County, Minnesota. Catherine, married Martin Van Buren Dieter March 25, 1867 in Rochester, Olmsted Co., Minnesota after Martin returned from the Civil War. Together Martin and "Kate" had 10 children: Emma Jean, John VanBuren, Mary Elizabeth, Rose Ann, Charles Varner, Ella Mae, George Peter, Walter Leslie, Wilton Arthur and Grover Adli.
The family moved around from Northern Minnesota, to North Dakota and Montana, where some of the older children settled to become farmers or ranchers. Martin and Kate moved on to Spokane, Washington where they lived out the remainder of their lives.
One of their daughters moved to Oregon and one to California so the Dieters were well represented in Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California.
