Wife of Frank Leslie Hedges. Daughter of Martin and Kate Keegan Dieter.
Emma Jean Dieter Hedges, age 75 years, 11 months, 3 days, was born September 3, 1868 to Martin and Catherine Keegan Dieter in Wabasha Co., Minnesota. She was married October 7, 1885 to Frank Leslie Hedges in Park River, North Dakota at a double wedding ceremony. To the couple were born 6 children, four of whom survive, two sons, Irving Victor and Earl Edwin of Salem; two daughers, Mrs. Lillian Darling and Mrs. Ellen Peterson also of Salem.(obit written by her daughter Ellen Hedges Peterson).
After their marriage Mr. & Mrs. Hedges lived for a short period in North Dakota, where they had their first two baby daughters who died shortly after birth. Soon they moved to northern Minnesota with other Hedges and Dieter families. A township was named there after Emma Jean's father Martin Dieter who was a Civil War Veteran. Frank Hedges farmed and Emma taught school in a school house built by the Dieters and Hedges men. When land opend up in Western North Dakota, the families were again on the move. In the fall of 1899 a couple of months before Emma was to give birth to her daughter Lillian, the families traveled by covered wagon across northern Minnesota and North Dakota to settle at abandoned Ft. Buford until they could purchase land. They lived in Williams Co., North Dakota (near Mondak) for a few years and later Mr.& Mrs Hedges moved to Montana in 1917 where they lived until 1929 when they moved to Salem. There they were residing at the time of Mr. Hedges' death in 1937. Mrs. Hedges, her son Irving and her daughter Mrs. Lillian Darling moved to the Liberty district in South Salem in 1939 where they were living at the time of her death.--S.Jones.
