The family emigrated to the United States about 1854, when Julia was 7. Her father died on the ship during the trip. In fact, a baby book of one of her great-grand-children lists her surname as White.
She married Nicholas Robert, Sr. on April 19, 1864 when she was 16 and he was 42 in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. They soon moved to a farm near Gilbertville, Black Hawk County, Iowa and remained there the rest of their lives.
There were eleven children:
1865 - Frank
1867 - Margaret (Mary Elizabeth)
1868 - Maria Ellen (Mame)
1870 - Nicholas Jr.
1871 - Catherine
1876 - Anna
1877 - Elizabeth (Lizzie)
1879 - Mathilda (Kundigunda)
1881 - Peter Clement
1883 - Julia
1891 - John Joseph
The last child was born when Julia was 43 and Nicholas was 69.
Julia died January 2, 1934 and is buried next to her husband in St. Mary's Cemetery in Gilbertville, Iowa.
