Joe was capture by the raiding indians who massacred his mother. Together with his father and younger brother, Christian, they were taken captive. They were separated and Joe was held captive for a couple years. There was some report that he learned the indian ways and was attracted to an indian girl. Later Joe resided in Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co., PA untill about 1806, when his name last appears on the tax lists of this township. In 1810 he bought from Joseph Root fifty acres in Fermanagh Twp., Mifflin Co.(now Juniata Co.), PA, near McAlisterville.
