Husband, Wife Die in Crash

VERMONTVILLE – A rural Vermontville couple died last night after their car smashed into a tree on Vermontville Highway about four miles east of here.

Wells H. Axtell, 75, a retired farmer, died in Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital in Charlotte at 11:40 p.m., three and a half hours after the crash. His wife, Mary E., died while being take to the hospital.
Wife Driving

Eaton County sheriff's officers said Mrs. Axtell, the driver, apparently lost control of the car. It left the north side of the highway and plowed into the tree, Mrs. Axtell was thrown from the car.

The Eaton County coroner attributed Mrs. Axtell's death to a neck fracture and internal chest injuries. Mr. Axtell, who had been paralyzed on the right side since he suffered a stroke last summer, died of a skull fracture, the coroner said.

Mr. and Mrs. Axtell, were married in Lansing in 1945 and had lived in the Vermontville area since that time. They had lived at a farm home on Route 1, Kelly Highway, since 1946.

Survivors Listed

Mr. Axtell is survived by a son by a previous marriage, Joseph Axtell of Lansing, and a grandson. Mrs. Axtell is survived by two children by a previous marriage, a son, Ronald Hyatt, who lived with his mother and stepfather; and a daughter, Mrs. William (Donna) Strimback of Route 2, Lake Odessa, Mrs. Axtell also is survived by her mother, Mrs. Edna Shears of Vermontville; a sister, Mrs. George (Frances) Beers of Grand Rapids, and seven grandchildren.

Couple Dies in Eaton Accident

Injuries Fatal To Wells Axtells As Car Hits Tree

Charlotte – Wells H. Axtell, 75, of Vermontville R1, and his wife, Mary, 49, were fatally injured Thursday at 8 p.m. when their auto left the road on Vermontville highway and struck a tree nine miles northwest of here.

It was the first traffic fatalities of the year in Eaton county.
Thrown From Car

Sheriff's officers said Mrs. Axtell, who was driving, was thrown from the car by the impact and was dead on arrival at Hayes-Green-Beach hospital here. She suffered a broken neck and internal injuries.

Axtell died in the hospital three hours after the accident. A retired farmer, he was an invalid who was partially paralyzed following a stroke a year ago. He suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries.

The couple had been visiting relatives in Charlotte.
List Survivors

Surviving Mrs. Axtell by a previous marriage are son, Ronald Hyatt, Vermontville; daughter, Mrs. William Strimback, Lake Odessa R2; brother, Kenneth Shears, Cedar Springs; sister, Mrs. George Beers, Grand Rapids; mother, Mrs. Celina Shears, Vermontville, and seven grandchildren.

Axtell's only survivor is a son, Joseph of Lansing.
