Richard had a younger sister Margaret Lucy Rose born on the 5th August 1906.
Their father was killed in 1915 at Loos.

Richard was married to Mildred Graham (nee Vinson), of Chelsea, London.

Flying in a Lysander L4812 Richard took off from Clairmarais Airfield, Pas-de-Calais, near St. Omer, France. The plane was shot down over St. Omer and crashed in St. Martin-au-Laërt.
Pilot Officer R E C Butterworth was also killed.
