The son of Robert & Rebecca Dorris, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with auburn hair and blue eyes. He apparently never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg June 23, 1863, and mustered into federal service there June 30 as a private with Co. A in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), then re-enlisted in Chambersburg February 18, 1864, as a corporal with Co. A in the three-year organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. Seriously wounded July 1, 1864, near Petersburg, Virginia, he was admitted to 1st Div, 5th Corps field hospital but died from his wounds.
