Parents:
John P. Furlong, Mary (Maria) Sophia Jones Furlong
Siblings:
Mary Martha, William Benjamin, Catherine A.(?), John Edward
As a child, Ellen's mother move their family from Franklin, Louisiana to Brunswick, Georgia. As a teenager, she met her future husband, B.B. Gray in Brunswick.
-In 1870, the couple wed, and made their home in Brunswick, until moving to Millwood, GA in Ware County, although they still maintained a home in Brunswick.
-In 1880, their growing family is listed in the federal census in Millwood. Ellen's mother, Mary Sophia Jones Furlong (widowed), is with them.
-By 1890 Ellen and B.B. moved to Coffee County (now Atkinson Co. - the Willacoochee, GA area). This is a productive time for the Grays, and for B.B.'s entrepreneurial efforts. The area thrived because of the industry he helped create. They built a large lumber mill at the Pine Bloom flag station (with a commissary, post office and chapel) on the Brunswick & Albany RR line, and he built several railroad lines.
-By 1910, an architecturally impressive home, called Pinebloom, was built on a large tract of land next to the mill. In the 1910 census, Ellen, BB, and all of her 13 surviving children are listed in the home. Later, there were hardships but the family was always known as one of the pioneering families of South Georgia.
-1926+ Ellen continued to live at Pine Bloom (with a few of her grown children at the residence) after B.B.'s death in 1926.
-In 1936 she passed away, at the age of 82, while visiting her daughter, Edna, in SC. This was only a few days after her son, George, died in a car crash. She was brought back to South Georgia to be buried along side her husband, and some of her children, in the Willacoochee City Cemetery. Her son, B.W., wrote "Ellen S. Gray was a great mother, and highly respected by her large family. She was never too tired to fix for them, and was a great cook and home maker. She had a heart for the unfortunate. No one left her house hungry, regardless of their station."
