As an adult, he forged his path in the same business, and worked as a general manager of operations for saw mills, on behalf of his father's lumber business, and independently. John lived on the family estate, Pine Bloom, after his father's death in 1926. He helped manage the farm, and finances, on behalf of his mother. He was entrusted with settling the estate, after his mother's death in 1936.
