The daughter of Robert Marlow Cone and Mary Jackson Hylton Cone, Mahitable (Mehitable) A. “Hattie" Cone Edwards McClelland was born April 20, 1837 in Ivanhoe, Bulloch County, Georgia and had six siblings. Through the Cone branch of the family, she was descended from Conn of the Hundred Battles, the first high king of Ireland.

On December 6, 1854 at age 17, Hattie married John P. Edwards from Effingham County. They had one daughter, Mary J. Edwards McClelland, born about the time of John's death. After John's death Hattie married about 1862 William Henry McClelland from Edgefield County, South Carolina, and they had nine children, including Mary: Mary J. Edwards McClelland (by her first husband), William Madison McClelland, Sula Frances McClelland Glisson, Alice E. McClelland Butler, Narsissie A. McClelland Melton, Palmer Pauline McClelland Chaplin, and two infants. In the 1900 census grandson John Melton (born October 1896) is shown living with William and Hattie.

Hattie was 72 when she died September 23, 1909. The death date on her grave stone, added decades after her death, is inaccurate. She was a descendant of Revolutionary War hero William Cone. She is buried at Old Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, near Ivanhoe (Briar Patch), Bulloch County. Her heritage was Scots and English. I hope one of her descendants will add her photo to this site.

Thanks so much to Hattie's granddaughter Nevada McClelland Bell, for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions.
