John P. Edwards, Jr. was born on January 21, 1827 in Effingham County, Georgia the eighth of 20 children of Rev. John P. “Jackie” Edwards, Sr. and Hannah E. Shearouse Edwards. He married Mahitable A. “Hatte” Cone Edwards McClelland on December 6, 1854, and they had one child, a daughter, Mary J. Edwards-McClelland, just after his death at age 33 on July 24, 1860 in Bulloch County, Georgia. His widow went on to marry William Henry McClelland and have seven more children. John is probably buried near his wife’s family in the Old Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, although he could be buried near his family in the Reiser Cemetery in Effingham County.
