On December 5, 1889 Herman Miller married Nellie Breen in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He was the son of Harm Mulder and Stientje (Stella) Smit Mulder. Herman changed his surname to Miller. This was the same Herman Miller who the furniture company in Zeeland is named for. Nellie and Herman Miller would become parents of six children: Stella Miller who married Henry Krombeen, Nellie Miller who married Dirk Jan DePree, Anna Miller who would marry Herbert C. Kling, Howard C Miller who married Martha Muller, Margaret Miller who married Stanley Harvey-Smith, and Earl Keith Miller. The Millers were married for fifty years when Nellie passed away on December 27, 1939. She was 67 years old at the time of her death.
