Son of Franz Ludwig Schmidt and Elizabeth Kaiser. He arrived in the US in 1868, with his parents and settled in Carmi, White County, Illinois.

The family eventually pushed on to Texas and Jake Schmidt settled in Galveston. Many of his siblings ended up in and around Fort Worth. Jake raised his family in Galveston and lived out his days on the Texas gulf coast.
