Jeremiah Foreman was born to Benjamin Foreman and Mary "Polly" Hines in Ohio . In the 1830 Census the Benjamin Foreman family was living in Marlboro, Delaware County, Ohio so I suspect that was probably the general area of Jeremiah's birth. Not a lot is known about Jeremiah's siblings but two older brothers are verified: Amos and Isaac. Sometime before 1840 the Foreman family moved to Vermilion County, Indiana because that was their location in the 1840 Census.

In the 1850 Census Jeremiah is living in Parke County, Indiana with his brother Isaac. Isaac's wife was Elizabeth "Eliza" Smart and her parents John and Mary Smart were living close to the Isaac Foreman family. Eliza's younger sister Mary Smart was living with her parents. Jeremiah and Mary Smart married August 26, 1851 at Rockville, Park County, Indiana. In the 1860 Census Jeremiah and Mary were living in Vermilion Township, Vermilion County, Indiana.

According to Jeremiah's Civil War records he lived in Newport when he joined the Union Army on July 10, 1862. He mustered in Company A of the Indiana 71st Regiment on Aug 16, 1862 and within two weeks was fighting in the Battle of Richmond on Aug 30, 1862. The 71st was severely defeated in one of the most lopsided defeats in the Civil War. The entire regiment was either killed, wounded or captured. Jeremiah was wounded in the right hip and carried the musket ball until his death. His wound was recorded in his pension benefits and he was even listed as wounded from The Battle of Richmond in a newspaper article. The 71st eventually regrouped and was severely defeated yet again. Their losses were so great that the remaining soldiers were merged into the Indiana 6th Cavalry. Jeremiah mustered out of the Indiana 6th Cavalry Company A on July 17, 1865 at Pulaski, Tennessee.

After the Civil War Jeremiah moved to Missouri along with his brother Isaac. They were both living with their families in Clinton County, Missouri in the 1870 Census. In the 1880 Census Jeremiah and his family were living in Joplin, Missouri . His occupation was listed as lead miner. He was earning $4 a month in Civil War pension benefits. His wife stated in her pension application for his service in the Civil War that he died in Indian Territory on July 23, 1886. I believe that the family was living around what is now the Miami, Oklahoma area because that is where their daughter Josephine "Josie" met my Great Grandfather James Turney. They were married in 1888.

The known children for Jeremiah and Mary Smart Foreman are Enos, Jane Grayless/Crandall, William, Mary "Mollie' Scruggs, Elizabeth "Lizze" Hillman, Josephine "Josie" Turney, Estilla and Arthur.
