BARBARA LEGAT

DEATH OF MRS. MARTIN LEGAT AN OLD AND HIGHLY RESPECTED RESIDENT, AFTER LONG ILLNESS

BROCKWAY, NOV 12---Mrs. Martin Legat passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 8. Her death was not unexpected as she was ailing for many months and all hopes for her recovery were given up before the end came. Last spring she took a treatment from the "famous" Dr. Till, of Somerset, Wis., and since that time her condition grew steadily worse. She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her loss: Messrs. Andrew and John Legat, both living in Brockway on their farms, Mrs. Joseph Slivnik, also of this place, and Mrs. Herman Reinhart of Washington. The three youngest daughters are Sisters: Barbara, O.S.B. of Bemidji; Sister Eleanora, O.S.B. of Duluth, and Sister Amata, O.S.B. of Chicago. The funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. from the St. Stephen church. Requiem High Mass was said by Rev. Trobec. The Ladies Sodality attended in a body, of which the deceased was a member. All the family except Mrs. Reinhart, were present.

Martin Legat came to this country with his family 35 years ago and settled on a homestead which his father proved up a few years before. He had nothing to start with, like all the other pioneer settlers, but by excellent management and diligent help from his wife and children, the family became one of the most prosperous and wealthy in this neighborhood. The children are now all grown up and well provided for. Mr. and Mrs. Legat had just completed a house on the Brockway townsite where they intended to live retired; but the Lord's will was otherwise.

Their friends and relatives wish to extend their hearty sympathy to the bereaved family.

CARD OF THANKS.

Martin Legat and family desire to express their gratitude to all the friends and relatives for the help and kindness done to their mother during her sickness and at the time of her death.--THE FAMILY

Mrs. John (sic--should be Martin) Legat died at her home in Brockway last night following an illness of several months. The funeral will take place from the Catholic church in Brockway tomorrow morning. Mrs. Legat was born in Germany (sic should be Austria, later called Slovenia) in the year 1840 and was 68 years of age. She had been a resident of Brockway for 23 years. The illness which caused the woman's death was a peculiar one. It appears that about six months ago an artery in the rear of her head became clogged and stopped the circulation of the blood. The woman did not know what ailed her and before a physician was summoned, the flesh on the top of her head lost its life and began peeling away. For the past month her skull was bare. The woman's condition caused complications which caused her death. Mrs. Legat is survived by her husband and seven children. Of these, two sons, John and Andrew Legat, reside at Brockway. Three daughters live in Washington state and two in the city of Chicago.
